What Causes Tooth Loss?

In the field of dentistry, our number one goal is to try to preserve the natural tooth because we understand that a prosthetic could never compare to the original. However, sometimes a tooth has to be removed, and if that is the case, it means either the damage was so significant that the only way to protect the surrounding teeth and jaw is to remove it, or there is no hope to save it and should be replaced. Here at Olympia Prosthodontics & Cosmetic Dentistry, we would rather you have preventative information rather than ever have to suffer tooth loss.

REASONS A TOOTH MAY COME OUT

For some, the notion of making a dental appointment is for those who care about their teeth and not someone who is just waiting for dentures. Through fear of pain, many people will avoid setting foot in a dental office before they will seek out treatment for their dental discomfort.

It is recommended that the average patient visit at least every six months for a thorough cleaning and assessment. Through this exam, we can detect anything that may have happened in those few short months. Often, bacteria can aggressively attack enamel depending on the lifestyle of the individual, and more frequent visits may be necessary to stay on top of it. We can also use x-rays to detect if there may be something we cannot see from the outside of the mouth readily, such as a cracked molar.

Many people may not feel comfortable with making an appointment and may go years before seeking help. During this time, they may neglect their oral care by avoiding brushing and the inconvenience of flossing while consuming a high-sugar, low-nutrient diet. If you notice that your teeth have a chalky substance growing around the gum line or bleeding when you brush, you should mention it to us at your next appointment. Both are recognized as the signs of first-stage periodontal disease, known as gingivitis. If ignored, this could be the number one cause of teeth falling out.

OTHER FACTORS TO DENTAL LOSS

If you have a family history of dental genetic disorders, you could more susceptible to gum disease or other issues. During your initial exam, we will be sure to ask about your past so we know what to be aware of before it can become a problem. Heavy smokers and drinkers are both at high risk for dental damage which could cause teeth to loosen or even fall out completely. Alternatively, sometimes we take a softball to the jaw. There are many ways to lose a tooth, but most of them are quite preventable.

To protect your smile, it can be as easy as using a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently remove debris after every meal and remembering to floss hard-to-reach particles out from between the teeth. Remember, every six months, an appointment with us here at Olympia Prosthodontics & Cosmetic Dentistry can help you stay on top of your oral health.
