Teeth Whitening

OLYMPIA, WA

For those who already feel like they have a pretty incredible smile, but would not mind adding a bit more pizzazz to the gleam, there are plenty of whitening options available on the market right now. From plastic strips with a gel that you wear over your teeth to chemicals added to toothpaste, so you go a shade, tooth whitening can be one of the easiest things you can do to enhance your smile. For those who would prefer a more professional approach, however, which minimizes irritation to the gums and lowers the risk of bleach stains on your enamel, having your teeth brightened through Olympia Prosthodontics & Cosmetic Dentistry may be a better way to ensure you get the outcome you want.

WHAT CAUSES ENAMEL STAINING?

Many foods may cause discoloration of the teeth and a few of them are something we are willing to give up. For example, most people do not like to start a day without a hot cup of coffee. It is unfortunate that a good espresso contains acids that might stain our enamel, but for some, there is no alternative to that caffeine boost first thing in the morning. Other drinks that may stain as well are tea and sodas, and even sports drinks can erode the enamel. The acidity of these drinks could also make your teeth more susceptible to staining from other sources.

If you have ever noticed your plastic container of leftover spaghetti marinara can be difficult to clean after it has been used, then you may already have an idea of how acidic tomatoes are. Because they can cling to the enamel as well, you are left even more vulnerable to the effects of the acids if you do not remove it. Curry is also known to stain your teeth due to the turmeric used in it and over time could make them an unattractive yellow color. For those who enjoy curry as a staple and undoubtedly do not want to give it up, you might want to consider rinsing out your mouth well after a meal with water to ward off preventable staining.

HOW CAN I KEEP MY SMILE, WHITE?

Tooth whitening is a superior option for removing surface stains and many people can benefit from it. It is not a one-time-only procedure, however, and even if you do your best to refrain from staining elements, you may still need an upkeep treatment from time to time.

When we treat your teeth, first we will take care of any cavities that we find. Whitening solution can be absorbed through the decayed areas and get into your tooth. Be aware that if you have receding gums, we will not be able to treat the discolored roots because whitening products are unable to make them whiter, and it is also possible your gums may be more sensitive to the chemicals that are used.

In our office, we use a whitening gel that is more powerful than what you can get in a box from the grocery store. The process is done in the privacy of your own home. We will start with special trays that are custom designed to fit your teeth. The process will usually only take a week or two to get your desired results.

Having a bright and healthy smile can be a very important part of your unique lifestyle, so if you would like to learn more about how a professional teeth whitening can help you, or to learn about other options like dental veneers and dental cleanings, please give us here at Olympia Prosthodontics & Cosmetic Dentistry a call at (360) 456-1200 to schedule an appointment for your whiter and brighter smile.
