Overdentures

Millions of people are missing at least one tooth, and for millions of others, they are missing all. For some, it can be a difficult lifestyle to adjust to, but dentures can be the best option for many depending on what sort of treatment their mouth requires. Many of us remember seeing floating teeth in a cup on the nightstand and wonder what sort of future that entails, but it does not have to consist of the memories we may have of our relatives’ loose dentures. Here at Olympia Prosthodontics & Cosmetic Dentistry, we want to provide the same confidence in your prosthetic as you could your natural teeth, which is why overdentures may be right for you.

WHAT ARE DENTURES?

In the day, dentures were usually cast to your gum shape and held on through suction. Though adhesives are available, it could take a while to figure out which one works best. In the meantime, the plates could slip and cause problems with speaking or eating. Many people may have suffered from a drop in self-esteem as it became obvious that they had false teeth which could look fake if poorly made.

Modern technology has given us many advancements in the field of dentistry which has revolutionized the most necessary of many dental procedures. This includes dentures, which can now be replicated through 3D imaging to create an ideal fit and realistic appearance. Many dentures are much lighter and therefore, easier to secure using traditional methods such as glue. However, there is much more than that available which can be found quite useful for some.

HOW IMPLANTS BENEFIT DENTURES

Because many people would prefer the confidence that comes with teeth that do not slip whenever they open their mouth, another option that could be appreciated is the use of overdentures. These can be attached to the jaw through dental implants which means they are less likely to shift. The reason behind this is that when an implant is used, a titanium stud is fused with your bone tissue to create a foundation for supporting structures such as dentures or bridges.

For many, implants can be placed in the jaw bone and used to keep dentures stable. Others may have teeth that are still strong enough to support a prosthetic and may be used in securing the false teeth. This allows for possible regeneration of the jaw while at the same time keeping permanent teeth from falling out due to deterioration of the bone. The best part is, if you are considering this option and you already have a set of dentures, they can be converted into overdentures.

You will still need to take care of your implants and gums, even with dentures to ensure a strong fit for many years to come. With overdentures, however, you can still remove them without problems and still feel confident that they are as secure in your mouth as your natural teeth.
