HOW TO CARE FOR A NEW PARTIAL DENTURE

Having a partial denture improves your smile and gives you increased confidence. Therefore, taking care of the prosthesis is incredibly important.

WHAT IS A PARTIAL DENTURE?

A partial denture is designed for partially edentulous patients who wish to restore the functionality of their smile when they have one or more missing teeth. You should brush the denture with a soft denture brush or toothbrush and use a denture cleanser.

CLEANING YOUR PARTIAL DENTURE

To clean your partial denture, you need to remove it to clean it. Clean it daily to get rid of stains and plaque. Again, use a soft denture brush to clean the artificial tooth or teeth. You can also use a soft toothbrush. Just do not use a medium or firm brush, as doing so can erode and damage the denture. Soak the denture in a denture cleanser to kill the bacteria or clean it with mild dish soap. Do not use toothpaste, as most dentifrices are too abrasive and can damage the appliance.

HOLD THE DENTURE OVER THE SINK

To rinse off food, always hold the denture over the sink to avoid dropping it and breaking it. When using a brush, moisten it and apply a denture cleaner, brushing the surfaces softly. Use a gentle motion to avoid damaging the plastic on the appliance or bending the metal. Before placing the denture back in your mouth, brush your gums, teeth, and tongue with a soft-bristled toothbrush and ADA-approved toothpaste. Soak the denture overnight while you sleep, so it stays moist and maintains its shape. Remember that a partial denture is a fragile restoration.

If your denture gets damaged, do not try to repair it. Doing so might change the fit and cause gum sores or irritation. If your partial cracks or one of the teeth is loose, visit our office right away. We can make the needed adjustments or send the denture to a lab if the repairs are more complex.
