DENTURES ARE NOT ALWAYS EASY FOR SENIORS TO ADJUST TO

For many people, dentures can feel strange and uncomfortable at first. Not only will you need to adjust to the way dentures feel in your mouth, but you almost have to “relearn” how to eat and speak with your new set of teeth. Here are some helpful tips for adjusting to your new dentures, so you can enjoy talking, laughing, smiling, and eating again.

EATING

We recommend eating only soft foods for the first few days after getting dentures. Foods like scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, yogurt, and pudding are easy on your gums and jaw, and will help you get used to the sensation of eating while wearing your new dentures. Once you feel comfortable with chewing, you can begin to introduce more solid foods into your diet. Make sure you chew slowly and use both sides of your mouth to prevent your dentures from slipping. We recommend avoiding very hard, chewy, or sticky foods as these can be difficult to chew and might get stuck in your dentures.

As you adjust to your dentures, you will probably notice that your mouth is producing more saliva. This symptom should lessen over time as you become accustomed to your dentures. Sucking on a piece of candy can help you get used to swallowing with the increased saliva flow.

TALKING

Some letter sounds might be more difficult to produce now that you have dentures. Take time to practice the words or sounds that give you the most trouble; try reading out loud from a book or reciting words in front of a mirror. Be patient, speak slowly, relax your facial muscles, and remember that as with any new activity, speaking with dentures will take practice.

CARING FOR YOUR DENTURES

The best way to adjust to your new dentures is to wear them as much as possible, even if they feel uncomfortable. Follow our instructions about removing them at night and caring for them properly. New denture wearers might experience sores in the first few weeks of having dentures, but rinsing your mouth with warm salt water should help. If you continue to feel discomfort or have trouble adjusting to your dentures after the first few weeks, please call our office.
