Do you remember when you first got dentures? It was probably a great day for you, because you were able to eat, speak, and smile without a problem. If you have had dentures for a while, you may not have the same feelings about them that you did when you first got them. In fact, you may have noticed that your dentures don't fit as well as they should. How do you know when to bring your dentures in for a refit? We have some signs for you that may show your dentures need to be refitted.
THE FIRST SIGN: DISCOMFORT
One of the biggest signs that your dentures need to be refit is when they are uncomfortable to wear. We know that the first couple of weeks can be difficult if you have new dentures. However, your discomfort should decrease the longer you wear the dentures. If you are still having discomfort more than a month after you got dentures, or you recently began having discomfort, and you have had your dentures for a while, they may be too loose, which means they are rubbing up against your gums and causing discomfort.
ARE YOUR DENTURES MOVING?
Your upper dentures should fit securely. Your lower dentures are made to float a little above your gums. If your upper dentures are moving around, this could be a sign that they are loose. Your lower dentures should move a little, but not excessively, so if you think they are moving too much, you need to get them checked.
LOOSE DENTURES GIVE YOU PROBLEMS IN YOUR MOUTH
There are several problems that come with having loose dentures. You may have pressure sores in your mouth from loose dentures. You could develop mouth ulcers as well from parts of your dentures rubbing against the sides of your mouth. You might find you have trouble eating or swallowing, and you might hear a clicking sound when you are eating or speaking. Luckily, all of these issues can be fixed quickly.
