HOW TO BEST CARE FOR REMOVABLE DENTURES AND PARTIALS

Cleaning dentures well is essential in keeping your mouth healthy, and free of decay. While there are several ways of cleaning dentures, the safest option is to use a cleaner specifically designed for dentures.

These often come in tablet or powder form, and are mixed with water to form an effervescent solution. Dentures are placed in the solution overnight.

Another problem this tackles is the excessive drying of dentures; dentures need to be kept moist to maintain their form. Make sure to rinse your dentures thoroughly before putting them back into your mouth. While denture cleaner is great for the dentures themselves, the chemicals in denture cleaners should not be swallowed.

Just like natural teeth, you should rinse your dentures after eating and drinking. This practice can help remove any food debris lodged within your dentures, and keep bacterial overgrowth at bay. Avoid rinsing your dentures with hot water; hot water causes the plastic in dentures to become lax, changing their shape. Dentures that do not fit well are a hazard to their wearers.

Dentures and partials should also be brushed daily. But be gentle; using too much force while brushing, brushing with too stiff a brush, or using an abrasive toothpaste can actually damage dentures and partials. Many dentures and partials use plastic clasps to help seal onto the gums. It is important that these parts are not damaged, and that dentures do not suffer extensive wear and tear. Our dentists can recommend the best toothbrushes and toothpastes for dentures.
