We want to reassure all of our patients we are here for them in light of the current COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic. The Governor's stay in place mandate still allows us to see you in a dental emergency (dental pain, a broken tooth, or any active infection). Please reach out to us if you have an emergency and we will be happy to see you.
In the meantime, please stay healthy! We are excited to see you when things return to normal!
Stay Healthy and Safe!
For those who may be considering dental work shortly, the greatest source of apprehension may be the physical discomfort associated with it that nobody likes to experience before, during, or after any medical procedure. The good news is, that through recent developments in technology, especially in the field of dentistry we here at Olympia Prosthodontics & Cosmetic Dentistry can help you manage pain quite effectively through topical and sedation options.
How Is Sedation Useful?
There are many reasons why a person would want to be sedated before surgery. Even if they have good natural pain tolerance, there is still the anxiety of what the procedure entails and possible results. It can put a lot of stress on the body, never mind the concentrated focus on the mouth, so it could help with the recovery if a patient feels more comfortable overall before the surgery happens rather than just during or afterward.
Unfortunately, traumatic childhood experiences also may follow many of us into adulthood. When combined with a range of fears from needles to enclosed spaces, it may become necessary to administer a treatment ahead of time that may help alleviate much of the anxiety. With oral sedation, a pill can be given the night before to combat sleep anxiety, and another can be given an hour before the procedure so that the patient feels very relaxed during the operation.
Many people can appreciate the effects of laughing gas, which is often used. It is known to make you feel very mellow and comfortable during the surgery. You should not feel any pain, but you will also be conscious so we can continue to communicate while you are receiving your treatment. It enters your system through a mask that fits over just your nose, and when you stop receiving the gas, you should feel normal within only a few minutes.
The most preferred method for those who would rather have immediate relief is intravenous sedation. A cocktail is designed specifically for your needs, and depending on the level of alertness we need you to have. We even use a topical anesthetic to numb your skin before we put the needle in, so the whole process could be quite painless. Also, many people have noted they remember nothing of the surgery, even though they were awake the whole time.
Why Sedation May Help You
If you have a fear of sitting in the dental chair, it may comfort you to know that you are not alone. Because it can be quite common, the field of dentistry is always looking for new ways to make your experience more tolerable and less unpleasant.
