Whether through partial or full dentures, using glue that does not quite keep the teeth secure can be a disadvantage to false teeth that some people try to get used to. Having to avoid certain foods for fear of embarrassment or breaking their prosthetic may also be an inconvenience many would rather do without. Here at Olympia Prosthodontics & Cosmetic Dentistry, we understand how important it is to feel comfortable with the activities we do every day, such as speaking and eating, and why dental implants may be able to help you obtain that.

What Are Dental Implants?

When a tooth falls out, you are losing more than the part you see inside your mouth. You also lose the root, which is responsible for sending out messages to keep your tooth healthy. Without a root, the bone begins to deteriorate since there is nothing in the socket to preserve. This can cause the bone structure to deconstruct itself, which may compromise the integrity of the remaining tissue. In turn, this may inflict the remaining teeth and cause them to slide or fall out as well.

With a dental implant a small titanium bolt is inserted into your jaw bone as a replacement for your root. Through a process is known as osseointegration, the metal and bone can fuse. This means your body accepts the metal as a surrogate root and will use it to keep the surrounding bone foundation strong. The implant alone can be enough to keep your jaw regenerating as though you had never lost a tooth.

How Dental Implants Benefit You

Many dental prosthetics can be secured through the use of implants. Usually, with an implant, a porcelain crown is attached through an abutment connector and can be a permanent replacement for a missing tooth. However, for multiple teeth, there are also viable options. For example, if you already have a partial or denture, we can give it attachments to connect it to your dental implants which should improve how securely they fit. We can also custom-design an entirely new set of dentures with less material which may provide a better feel with a more natural appearance.

Even though they are not your real teeth, it does not make it any less important to take care of them. Though in general, it does not require much more upkeep to take care of your prosthetics, you will still need to treat them like your own, since that is what they are. Bacteria may not cause the same type of destruction to your implants as they would your root, but it can still irritate the gums and leave them susceptible to the effects of periodontal disease, which could cause you to lose the implant.

Though your implant is designed to last for a lifetime, sometimes your artificial crown or denture may become chipped or broken. In which case, we here at Olympia Prosthodontics & Cosmetic Dentistry would be happy to help you to repair your smile with a replacement in no time at all.
