People who just get dentures might expect that all of the problems they had when they had few teeth and few options are gone--after all, they got a brand-new set of teeth. However, you do not get magically used to your dentures in one day. That doesn't mean it won't happen. If you are worried about wearing your dentures, we're here to tell you--it's time to wear them without being afraid. Here are some tips for wearing dentures without fear.
Take Some Time to Get Used to Your Dentures
A lot of people report that when they first get their dentures, they are uncomfortable. There is a lot more saliva in their mouths than there used to be. The dentures feel strange. We understand all of those feelings. However, all of this is normal. You have more saliva in your mouth from dentures at the beginning because your body treats dentures like a foreign object. The longer you have your dentures in, the less excess saliva you'll have.
Also, be understanding that your mouth has to get used to your dentures. This means that you'll need to eat soft foods when you first get your dentures. Your gums will be a little tender and they may be a little swollen if you had to get teeth pulled before you got dentures. Eat soft foods for a couple of weeks after you get dentures, and rinse your mouth out with warm, salty water as well. This will help your gums get used to your dentures.
If you give your mouth a little time to get used to dentures, you will be rewarded with a better ability to eat, speak and smile once you get used to them. Dentures can be life changing! If you have questions about dentures, give us a call. We love to discuss dentures with people.
