Why Do You Get Denture Sores and How Can You Fix the Problem?Dentures can restore your smile and make eating a much less painful experience, but they can cause other types of pain if you're not careful. Denture sores are caused by a number of issues with dentures.

However, the underlying cause is almost always something to do with the way your dentures fit or, in this case, don't fit. Here are a few things that can make your dentures fit incorrectly and what you can do about it.

The Dentures Don't Fit

Over time, your mouth will actually change. This means your dentures may no longer fit as perfectly as they once did. When that occurs, you need to come in and have us adjust their fit. In some cases, you may need an entirely new pair of dentures.

You may also find that there's something wrong with the fit of your brand-new dentures. They should stay in place all the time—while eating, talking, laughing, coughing, sneezing, and everything else. If they don't, they need to be adjusted as soon as possible to avoid sores and pain.

You've Worn Your Dentures for Too Long

If you've gone for long periods of time without taking out your dentures, the sores and pain may simply be because the gums under the dentures need time to rest. They've been under the pressure of the dentures for hours, and they need a break. Simply taking your dentures out while you sleep will help ensure this doesn't happen.

You Have an Infection
Gingivitis and other gum infections can also lead to sores and pain. If you suspect your denture sores are due to infection, you'll want to carefully examine your gums for signs of inflammation and swelling. You can also contact us and set up an appointment. If we find that your gums are infected, we can prescribe antibiotics to take care of the issue.
